It literally means "zero" in French ("Baccarat") and Italian ("Baccara") but this card game definitely scores way higher that its name in all casinos and online gaming sites. In fact, Baccarat is known as a high-roller game, with a special area usually cordoned off in casinos to convey exclusivity as well as afford more privacy to its players.
Adding to its air of prestige and glamour is the fact that it was a game originally played by French nobility and in modern times, Baccarat is one of the few casino games that has a high betting minimum.
The rules are pretty simple though and do not require much thought nor strategy: the goal is to bet on the hand that comes closest to the value of 9. Two cards are dealt, and the value of the two cards are basically added up with the final value being the right digit of the sum of the two cards - for instance, 7 and 5 = 2, a Queen and 9 = 9 (since face cards and 10 would have the value of 0, hence the name of the game).
Only two hands are dealt - the player's box and the banker's box. You then have three possible choices for a bet. You can bet on the player's hand; the banker's hand; or a tie between the two, with the last scenario having the biggest payout.
For a winning bet on a tie between the player's and the banker's hand, payouts would go from 8 to 1 or in some casinos 9 to 1. Winning bets on a banker's hand would have the smallest payout as there is still a 5% house commission generally levied by casinos).
